EFECTS OF SEX, FREE TESTOSTERONE, AND ANDROGEN RECEPTOR CAGREPEAT NUMBER ON SPATIAL COGNITION AND VIRTUAL NAVIGATIONPERFORMANCEbyNICOLE T. NOWAKMay 2012Advisor: Dr. Scott D. MoffatMajor: Psychology (Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience)Degree: Doctor of PhilosophyThe male advantage typically found on some measures of spatial cognition (e.g.,mental rotations) has been approached for three decades from the perspective thatandrogens contribute to this sex difference. To date, evidence to support the notion thatandrogens affect spatial cognition in healthy young individuals is balanced by evidenceto the contrary. The present study sought to clarify the association between androgensand spatial performance by extending our measurements of androgenicity to includeboth a measure of circulating testosterone as well as a receptor-specific marker. The aims of this dissertation were to assess the effects of sex, testosterone, andandrogen receptor CAG repeat number on spatial performance and experience in agroup of healthy young men and women. The hypothesis that men would outperformwomen on measures of spatial skills was largely supported, with some caveats.Predictions that testosterone would relate directly to spatial performance were notconfirmed; however, results indicate that number of CAG repeats may have a directimpact on cognition, and may modify the relationship between testosterone and spatial

P-91: Androgen Associated Gene Polymorphism(s) in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome from South Indian Population

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrine disorder affecting 4-12% of reproductive women worldwide; characterized by chronic anovulation, clinical and/or biochemical hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound scan. Ovarian androgen overproduction is the key pathophysiologic feature of PCOS. A number of genes encoding major enzymes of the androgen meta...

Mental rotation in intellectually gifted boys is affected by the androgen receptor CAG repeat polymorphism.

Testosterone was shown to organize brain and modulate cognitive functions. It is currently unknown whether mental rotation is also associated with prenatal testosterone exposure and testosterone-related genetic polymorphisms. The aim of our study was to analyze associations between mental rotation performance, the actual testosterone levels, the prenatal testosterone level (expressed as 2D:4D r...

Assessment of Correlation between Androgen Receptor CAG Repeat Length and Infertility in Infertile Men Living in Khuzestan, Iran

Background The androgen receptor (AR) gene contains a polymorphic trinucleotide repeat that encodes a polyglutamine tract in its N-terminal transactivation domain (NTAD). We aimed to find a correlation between the length of this polymorphic tract and azoospermia or oligozoospermia in infertile men living in Khuzestan, Iran. MaterialsAndMethods In this case-control study during two years till 20...

No Significant Difference Between Intact and Testosterone Depleted or Administrated Male Rats in Spatial Learning and Memory

Androgens have been shown to affect cognitive aspects of spatial memory. Testosterone which is the most important androgen, plays a role in the organization of behavior during development. Also, it has been shown that androgens cause sex related differences in learning and memory especially during neonatal period. In the current study, we assessed the effects of castration and testosterone ena...
